notes Thaw was commissioned by Third Coast Percussion Quartet and premiered in April 2009. This piece imagines what it might sound like to be immersed in a block of ice, still and cold with only the faintest beat of the outside world. Thaw begins with the sound of two glockenspiels and a large drum. As the ice starts to thaw, solid rhythms and pulse streams break apart. One solid structure is transformed into countless frigid tributaries, which, in time, evaporate completely.

notes Eyelid Margin is a brass quintet with added double-reed choir. The eyelid margin is the edge where the front and back of an eyelid meet. Viewed from the front, the eye is hidden, but behind the back of the eyelid, the eye continues to perceive light. The margin is the first and last point at which the eye is fully exposed, and like a horizon, the first direct light appears as a long and narrow strip when the eyelid first opens.

Candy (previously titled Licorice Men) passes a simple melody around the quartet, bouncing from one player to another with seeming ease. When individuals start throwing wrenches in expected patterns, a taut and placid texture becomes more explosive.

 "So let's say I buy the bond and buy protection on it. If it defaults, I get paid par for my bond. I make 8 points. If it doesn't default, and the carry isn't negative, nothing happens. I get paid they yield on the bond, but probably gave up all the spread buying the Credit Default Swap. Cutest Little Arbitrage was commissioned for Ensemble Klang by Musiek Centrum Nederland and Gaudeamus Musiekweek. Set in three short movements, it's a study in diverging but coexisting senses of pulse. Throughout the piece, musicians are called to play together through shifting pulse-fields, to split apart into groups playing different tempi, and to rigorously adhere to a strict pulse that the music they are playing makes every effort to mask. One goal of setting up such games with meter is to create the effect of an overriding rhythmic force that, if not always unifying, is bigger than the independent pulse-streams flowing within it. The underlying rhythmic schemes of the piece, as well as the pitch centers, are derived from one outside sample, taken from steaming video on the internet and triggered through samplers played by the ensemble.

When my good friend Timo asked me to write him a piece, I wanted to create something that would exploit his dual identity as a composer and performer, and maybe even pit those sometimes-oppositional forces against each other. What I came up with was Parlor Diplomacy, a piece whose material is at odds with its organization.

Gestures, harmonies and rhythms from Parlor Diplomacy are extracted from the context that might have once given them a different meaning. What could have been an incidental trill is isolated and stuck under stage lights, or a series of falling figures is divorced from its historically-appropriate sequence. The result is a familiar yet unsettling landscape of fragments and echoes.

The first movement is a rhythmically-challenging and somewhat overzealous "trill-tastic" barnburner. 

The second movement is an homage to Brahms' stunning Intermezzo, Op. 119 in B minor, portraying an echo of a ripple of a wave from the heart-breaking motif of a descending line; or perhaps imagining how Brahms might have heard each note falling at its own rate in its own universe, unencumbered by 19th-century rules of harmony and rhythm.

The third movement seeks to recreate the magic of an intermediate piano student (or not-particularly-good classical pianist such as myself) discovering a piece of music for the first time, very slowly, almost awkwardly, separated from many musical parameters necessary for a succesful performance yet somehow still uncovering and preserving some of music's essential beauty, for the ears of only the performer.

The fourth movement comes closest to respecting classical rules of form and development, beginning with a ground bass and later developing material in a style that owes much to a typical theme-and-variations. While dissonances in harmony and rhythm firmly place this music in a contemporary historical context, its method of presenting itself -- that is, the preservation of the grammar as well as the sounds of classical music -- makes it the most traditional of all the movements.

As Wikipedia creates a "disambiguation" page to help sort similar-sounding entries into a meaningful catalog, the final movement ambiguizes gestures by separating them from any grid or hierarchy that might help clarify their musical role. It is a pithy collection of cadences going nowhere.

But I Voted for Shirley Chisholm was commissioned by the Brooklyn Philharmonic in 2012. This short overture integrates cut-up samples from Biz Markie's 1988 song "Nobody beats the biz" which include the following lyrics: "Make you co-operate with the rhythm / that is what I give ‘em / Reagan is the Prez’ but I voted for Shirley Chisholm.” Since then, various hip-hop artists have appropriated this lyric in their own work: Redman+ Method Man in 1999 (“Clinton is the president, I still voted for Shirley Chisholm”) and LL Cool J in 2006 (“George Bush is the Prez, but I voted for Shirley Chisholm”) among them. This piece is both a tribute to Shirley Chisholm, and an exploration of the way sampling can embed a dialogue among musicians into a piece of music.

notes Crispy Gentlemen is built with four contrasting sections of music, each featuring a different color from bass clarinetist Christa van Alstine. I started with these discrete passages as a nucleus in the center of the piece, then worked my way out (both forwards and backwards), constantly revisiting and replaying the music along the way. I copied and and pasted snippets, reordering and transforming their presentation ad infinitum, until the piece began and ended with a dense mosaic of all the material in short spurts in rapid succession. The counterpoint between individual lines, and the proportions between the musical sections are constantly in flux, with one player slowing down as another speeds up, one chunk getting clipped as another stretches out. This should result propulsive and thorny music with an underlying rhythmic grid that is not always perceptible.

The title is a reference to the music's texture, which sounds like its composite parts have been fried with hot grease in a shallow pan.

notes Furtive movements is a piece for cello and percussion, performed in four consecutive sections with no breaks. It lasts about 14 minutes, and was commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, for Ashley Bathgate and Ian Ding.

Furtive movements is a phrase found in many reports from the New York City Police Department: it is the most commonly cited reason individuals were detained under the Stop and Frisk policy. This phrase is striking to me, because it claims to describe a person's movements but really speaks more to the expectations of the officer observing them. The phrase conveys the assumption of guilt -- furtiveness -- based on appearance or demeanor in a given moment.

Writing this piece, I was inspired by the idea of freeing an individual from the role(s) they may be expected to fulfill. The cello and the drum set (timbrally and acoustically very different forces) may be more easily defined by their differences than their similarities. So my challenge in writing Furtive movements was to call their assumed identities into question and to try and blur the lines between their musical roles. Rhythmic and melodic responsibilities are shifted fluidly between players, and there are long passages where the instruments play in unison.

I also chose to "prepare" the cello by wedging a wine cork between the two middle strings. This enables the cello to make startling unique sounds (harsh and distorted at sometimes, gong-like at others), and also very much obstructs the instrument's ability to project sound in the way it was intended.

This piece consists of twelve variations on "The Cage," by Charles Ives. The music is constructed entirely from shards of works by other contemporary American composers -- all composers born within 10 years of myself. These works are:

It's a homage to composers who continue to make noise and to struggle toward individual expression, and to Ives, who really knew how to mine, pillage and decontextualize the music of his time.

For the love of Charles Mingus (2016, 9 min.)

program notes For the love of Charles Mingus, inspired by Mingus's dense and soulful The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (1963), imagines some echo of that artifact living and breathing under layers of distortion and interference. Like the sound of voices singing from inside a church when you’re passing on the street, or a song you’re barely picking up on a distant radio signal, you are drawn to imagine this music in a more complete form than you can actually hear. But you know it's there.

I love the cacophonous feel of Mingus's music, the complexity masquerading as sloppiness, his total embrace of irreducible differences and the grit between the lines. In this piece, as in Black Saint, the connective tissue is rhythmic. A stubborn polyrhythmic relationship gradually emerges from all manner of squeaks and scratches, and finally the door swings open on resonance. 

From Mingus's own liner notes for Black Saint: 

"12:8, 6:8, 9:8, 3:4 -- whatever musical stenographers may care to title what the composer heard in his head, is part of a very old idea that someday all good music will return from its assorted labels which inhibit it with fashions, styles, and certain celebrated rhythms of pounding exactness that lead this composer to believe that either the musician or the audience playing or liking such repeated debuts of so-called musical inventions must be nuts to need drums, bass, guitar, and piano to pound out the already too obvious time night after night 'til actually if sanity can't be sustained one begins to like it without twisting or even dancing, popping fingers, or at least working out one's frenzy in ye old brass bed mama."

And then later:

"I wrote the music for dancing and listening. It is true music with much and many of my meanings. It is my living epitaph from birth til the day I first heard of Bird and Diz. Now it is me again. This music is only one little wave of styles and waves of little ideas my mind has encompassed through living in a society that calls itself sane, as long as you're not behind iron bars where there at least one can't be half as crazy as in most of the ventures our leaders take upon themselves to do and think for us, even to the day we should be blown up to preserve their idea of how life should be. Crazy? They'd never get out of the observation ward at Bellevue."

"By-By Huey P." by Richard Arneson


notes Robert Arneson’s painting “Bye Bye Huey P.” is a portrait of 24-year old Tyrone “Double R” Robinson, who murdered Huey P. Newton (co-founder of the Black Panther Party) in 1989. Robinson, a member of the Black Guerrilla Family, is painted with a giant praying mantis superimposed over his face, its wings circling Robinson’s bloodshot eyes. When I saw this work at the Frankel Gallery, my guide told me Arneson included the mantis in the portrait because “they eat their own.”

Like Arneson’s painting, my piece By-By Huey memorializes the (self-)destructive. The piano leads, with aggressive and unhinged music that forces the other instruments to follow or be left behind, but its strings are muted for much of the piece, leaving its voice muzzled and growling.

This piece is a part of Sleeping Giant's evening length collection of works for eighth blackbird, called Hand Eye

Word for Word is a piece that uses familiar sounds in surprising contexts.

Each movement is built from a very small chunk of material. The material itself could have been ripped from a piece of orchestral music from the 19th century. However, the way this music moves through time wouldn't be possible in a world without electronic music, produced music, and music that is notated using computer software. This puts the material at odds with its organization, and makes it wholly un-19th-century.

As the piece begins, a two-measure passage of orchestral music (based on a fleeting moment from a famous old symphony) is copied-and-pasted and transposed, over and over again, each time in a slightly different way. Doing this by hand would require a composer to literally copy each modified passage over again, but of course, a composer with a computer can carry out the same process in seconds. This technology allows for endless trial and error, but has also made the act of "splicing" commonplace. The energy and tension in this opening music comes from the way that copying-and-pasting (and transposition) transforms the material over time as it were.

For this reason, the first movement is named Ctrl-V, after the standard keyboard command to "paste" copied material. [The Unix programming language defines Ctrl-V to mean "the next character should be treated literally." In this case, the "V" is for "Verbatim" - not coincidentally, a standard definiton for verbatim is "word for word."]

The second movement, continuing without a break from the first, might as well be called Ctrl-X (the analogous command for "cut"). The material is a scherzo, but through notable omissions, splices and erasures, the music points more to the frame of a scherzo or the act of listening to a scherzo.

The final movement applies these techniques in a more delicate way, slowly and carefully adding and subtracting tiny gestures from a single line of source material. In addition, the tempo and orchestration are subjected to similar transformations. Here, the music seeks to recreate the magic of discovering a piece of music for the first time - very slowly, even awkwardly, playing a single phrase over and over again, never really getting it "right" but strengthening with each reiteration the bond between the performer and the music.

Review: Albany Symphony Opening Concert 9/22/12 (excerpt)

The Albany Symphony presented a stunning concert to a packed house Saturday evening. It began with a startlingly different work called “Erasure Scherzo” by the new Composer-Educator Partner Ted Hearne. Only five minutes long, it had a memorable beginning with a repeating group of phrases somewhat in the style of Steve Reich. Then suddenly, just as it was changing in length, the music stopped.

Conductor David Alan Miller kept conducting, waving his hands in the air while no one played, for several measures. When the music started again, it was completely different, and this stop-and-start style, with little clips of music in different styles (and centuries) reminded one of tuning in a radio. Somehow it all worked, and was quite hilarious yet musically done, a very tough thing to accomplish. Bravo to the orchestra for holding it all together with no discernible errors.

When I was young, I had severe asthma. Attacks flared up often and my parents struggled to control them: one minute I’d be playing outside and the next I’d be headed to the hospital, wheezing, my breathing heavy and labored.

My asthma began to ease up when I was four or five years old, and most of my memories are hazy. I do remember, however, how it felt to be strapped to the face mask that helped me inhale medication and return to normal breathing. The sound of my lungs felt amplified, with all its noisy drips and hisses, clinging to the determined hum of my breath. This struggle could be scary to listen to, so I would often focus on the pulse of my heartbeat, which sounded huge. As the medication kicked in, my heart-rate would accelerate, but I still used it as a regulating force.

Respirator is an attempt to turn those memories into music. 

The pitched material of the piece — the “notes” — is sometimes heard only as a distant hum beneath a weight of instrumental grit and noise, and at other times is focused and clear. The “noise” is created by asking every musician to make sounds that obscure a single pure and discernible pitch (for example, wind players are asked to sing and play at the same time, the timpanist plays with cymbals on top of his drums, and the celli play with a wine cork wedged between two of their strings). Pitches come into focus along with the complexities of harmony, with all their implications and ambiguities. An enduring pulse regulates these sonic transformations from beginning to end.
