note Because, written in 2006 for the Chicago Children's Choir and performed since then by youth choirs across the country, tells the story of two periods of turmoil and challenge in American history -- the forced relocation of the Cherokee nation after the Indian Removal Act of 1830, and displacement of New Orleans residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

another important note! This piece has now aged and is being performed by a new generation of youth choirs. As with any piece of art, the difference between the place and time from which it was created and that in which it’s being received should be considered as an important part of its meaning.

The piece is about identifying with displaced people, and identifying and owning the history of displacement of oppressed peoples in the U.S. It grew out of some of the slogans and rhetoric being used at protests at that time (think "We Are All Palestinian") which permeated the discourse. The lyrics "because we were ...." were an evocation of empathy and identification with people that were different from you. They're lyrics about connecting the racism and classism that laid the foundation for the displacement of Gulf Coast residents post-Katrina with a larger historical trend of displacement in America vis a vis systems of white supremacy and oppression of nonwhite peoples living on this land.

The act of speaking (or singing) the words "I am [someone I am not]" is fraught and complicated. While I believe that act is a device that can be used to spark a meaningful discussion around discrimination, or identity, or humanity -- and while I believe that leaning into those complications and moving through them can contribute to art that is confrontational and provocative in a helpful way -- I am sure I would approach this piece differently if I wrote it today.

All that is to say, if you perform this music I hope it will be a catalyst toward complicated conversations with your musicians and audience.

notes For five years I sang as a regular member of the Choir of St. Mary the Virgin in Times Square, directed by the brilliant conductor and organist Robert McCormick. My colleagues in the choir, and Robert himself, pushed me to be the best musician I could week after weeks, and it was an honor to write this piece for the group.

program notes:

Ripple uses as its text just one sentence from one of the 400,000 internal military
cables known as the Iraq War Logs. It is part of a cable that describes an incident that took place on July 22, 2005, wherein an American military officer opened fire on an unidentified vehicle that was driving toward a checkpoint in Fallujah. As the cable plainly states, "The marine from Post 7 was unable to determine the occupants of the vehicle due to the reflection of the sun coming off the windshield." The occupants were in fact a family of Iraqi civilians - a mother was killed, her husband and two children badly injured.

notes Cordavi and Fig was written for the Cross-Atlantic Composers’ Partnership project. This exchange program, sponsored by Yale School of Music and London’s Royal Academy of Music, asked three composers from each school to write a piece with the same instrumentation as György Ligeti’s 1969 Chamber Concerto. However, while Ligeti called for two keyboardists (one playing harmonium and harpischord, one playing piano and celeste), I have asked my second keyboardist to play percussively inside the piano.

I wrote Cordavi and Fig while visiting Charleston, South Carolina. My good friends Nathan Koci and Ron Wiltrout are both fabulous and versatile musicians, and they played several gigs while I was in town. Each gig covered a different style of music, but they always played with passion and skill. This versatility, and the universality of good musicianship, inspired the sound of Cordavi and Fig, which is named after two Charleston restaurants at which Nathan and Ron played.

Body Soldiers is an evening-length concert, conceived by Mollie Stone and Ted Hearne. It combines original works and arrangements by Ted Hearne with music we learned on our two-month trip to South Africa in 2006, when we visited choirs who were adapting the words and dance movements of anti-Apartheid songs to reflect their current struggle against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Spearheaded by choral conductor Mollie Stone, we taught several traditional Xhosa and Zulu songs that have been adapted to directly address the pandemic to a choir from Chicago. It is an educational performance that seeks to explore the ways in which music can be used as a vehicle for social change.

In this part of the performance, we examine the experience of a black South African man being diagnosed by a medical professional. The accompany music paints the ensuing confusion, shock, and perhaps the giant cultural divide between doctor and patient.

You have AIDS.

You can't believe it? Let me explain.

Your blood has tested positive for the antibody to the human immunodeficiency virus. Your blood was first tested by an enzyme immune assay known as the ELISA test. This demonstrated the presence of HIV antibodies and was then confirmed by a Western Blot test. These tests are extremely accurate.

Therefore, you are infected with HIV.

Your blood has also been tested for levels of the particular immune cells most affected by HIV, the t-helper cells, also known as CD4 cells. The number of CD4 cells in your blood is your CD4 count. Your CD4 count is 100. Any CD4 count below 200 is considered indicative of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

So, like I said, you have AIDS.

Am I going too fast? HIV. CD4. AIDS. Any questions?

You seem like maybe you'd like a bit more information.

The human immunodeficiency virus is an encapsulated single-stranded RNA retrovirus, coated with CD4 receptors which bind helper T cells of the human immune system, facilitated by coreceptors which strengthen the interaction. CD4. CCR5. CXCR4.

Because your CD4 count has fallen below 200, you are now at risk for infections that take advantage of your weakened immune system. These are called opportunistic infections and include tuberculosis, pneumocystis, Kaposi sarcoma, cytomegalovirus, candidiasis, aspergillosis, progressive multi-focal leukoencephalopathy, oral hairy leukoplakia, and toxoplasmosis.

Too much information? Well, how about some good news? Because your CD4 count is below 200 and you have come to our clinic, you are eligible for treatment. First you will receive vitamins. And bactrim, which protects you from some infections. And we encourage you to eat a healthy diet with lots of vegetables and protein-rich, low-fat meats. Even better, though, if you qualify for our internationally recognized, globally funded, cutting-edge, state of the art, developing world, low resource, research-oriented, potentially short term, possibly sustainable protocol, you may have the opportunity to receive anti-retrovirals.

These include nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors like
nevirapine, also known as viramune
zidovudine, aka AZT
lamivudine, aka 3TC
stavudine, aka d4T
Also, possibly, protease inhibitors, such as
Idinavir, ritonavir, nelfinavir, saquinavir, tipranavir, fosemprinavir, atazanafir
You must be taking at least three drugs at all times to prevent mutation of the virus. You must take your three drugs every day. You must take the drugs at the same time each day. If you make mistakes with your drugs, your virus may become resistant to the drugs. Some of the drugs must be taken with food. Some of the drugs must be taken on an empty stomach. Some of the drugs will make you nauseous. Some of the drugs will make you feel full. Some of the drugs will make you gain weight. Some of the drugs will give you diarrhea. Some of the drugs will give you a headache. Some of the drugs will make you depressed.

If you do not take these drugs, you will die.

Ted Hearne writes:
“I conducted the Red Light Ensemble in their first concert in 2005. The group was started by Scott Wollschleger and Vince Raikhel, two of my best homeys from Manhattan School of Music, who had asked me to conduct Gerard Grisey's Vortex Temporum on their first concert. That experience - learning, rehearsing, performing such an incredible work of contemporary music with my friends - was super important for me, and after that, the fun never stopped.”

Although that blurb is meant as a plug for Red Light New Music’s latest album, Barbary Coast (2015), Hearne cites the experience of conducting Vortex Temporum (1995) as a formative creative moment in the chain of events which led to the composition of Vessels. Vortex, a seminal work by French spectralist Gerard Grisey, utilizes distinct textures to demarcate its various sections. Although Grisey dedicated Vortex Temporum to prominent Darmstadt School composers Helmut Lachenmann and Salvatore Sciarrino, he buried hidden influences of Impressionism– particularly, an extended homage to Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloe (1912) – amongst its largely atonal and microtonal vocabulary.

Grisey’s concept of buried material patiently stuck around while Hearne left the Manhattan School for further graduate work at Yale and wrote the comparatively large-scale, style-hopping Katrina Ballads (2007). Once he returned to a smaller, more traditional chamber instrumentation with Vessels, Hearne sought to reapply that layered effect in his own work. In a literal sense, the composer describes “masking the core sound of the instruments” with hazy textures he denotes in the score as ‘flickering’, ‘otherworldly’, and ‘dreamy, breathy’. These eventually give way to the “protected, rich material” – the core of the sound – which lies underneath. The structure of this narrative, driven entirely by shifts in the timbres produced by the violin and viola, is itself indebted to Grisey’s Vortex as well as to the work of Hearne’s fellow Red Light member, Scott Wollschleger.

Located further below what Hearne hears as the core sound of the trio is the influence of the minimal, groove-based textures of Michael Gordon and the rest of the Bang on a Can collective. Although these sounds are not strongly audible in Vessels, Hearne wanted to “bury that American influence and discover what ways its head would pop out” over the course of the piece. The composer explains the benefits of a diverse palette of inspiration in a blog post:

“Our divisions and alliances, our segregations and minglings, our power dynamics, our setbacks and progresses — they are all traceable in our musical decisions, and in the ways we choose to classify them. People identify with music that reflects some part of themselves. […] The composer’s (and performer’s) choices about how to express their ideas factor into their engagement of different genres or stylistic signifiers, and are usually inextricable from it.”

Vessels was written for Anne Lanzilotti and Miki Sophia-Cloud, who were some of the biggest new-music advocates during Hearne’s time at Yale and remain two of his closest friends and collaborators.
