Because was commissioned by the Chicago Children’s Choir and artistic director Josephine Lee in honor of their 50th anniversary, and accompanying 2007 Civil Rights Remembrance Tour. The text recalls two personal struggles that have faded from the memory of many Americans – the Cherokee Trail of Tears, and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
